The Heart of the Court: A History of Alloway Netball Club

Since our first whistle blew over five decades ago, Alloway Netball Club has grown from a single-team dream into a thriving pillar of the local sporting community. Our journey is one of passion, growth, and a dedicated "all-rounder" spirit.

Humble Beginnings (1973–1974)

The Alloway Netball Club was founded in 1973 by Lyn Brown and Lyn Newport. The club was born out of a need for local representation after the Escort Netball Club (under Merle Ebeling) grew too large to manage.

Starting with just one team in 1973, the club’s popularity was immediate. By 1974, we had already doubled in size to two teams, setting the stage for the rapid expansion to follow.

Growth and Leadership

In 1975, the club expanded further to five teams, two Senior and three Junior, drawing players primarily from the Alloway and Calavos areas. This era also saw a transition in leadership; when Lyn Brown stepped back, Lyn Newport took the helm, supported by the dedicated efforts of Ann Robinson and Joanne Norris.

Our growth remained steady and impressive. Over our first 20 years, we transformed from that lone inaugural team into a powerhouse of 12 teams, proving that the Alloway spirit was something players truly wanted to be a part of.

A Legacy of Excellence

Alloway has always been a formidable competitor on the court. We are proud of our reputation for consistency, having secured premierships or runner-up finishes across all divisions over the years. A particular highlight in our competitive history remains 1993, when Alloway 1 triumphantly claimed the Division A Championship.

Beyond local club success, many of our talented players have gone on to represent the region in representative teams, carrying the Alloway name to higher levels of competition.

Our "All-Round" Community

While the trophies are a point of pride, the true soul of Alloway Netball Club lies in our members. From the "little" to the "big," our success is built on the backs of volunteers who do it all:

  • Coaching and Umpiring

  • Scoring and Canteen duties

  • Total club support in every way possible

We celebrate every member who has contributed to making us "just all-round helpers." It is this community-first culture that has sustained us since 1973 and will continue to drive us forward for many years to come.
